Rotator Cuff Repair 2
Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair for large cuff tear
John Cartledge, 2003
In November 2003, I injured my left shoulder when I slipped on wooden flooring. Over the next few weeks my shoulder ached particularly at night which affected my sleep.
I consulted my GP, who gave me a cortisone injection, but as this did not improve my shoulder, arrangements were made to see Mr. Funk, who was a specialist in this field. Following scans on my shoulder, he advised me that I had a Rotator Cuff Tear which could only be repaired by surgery. I was told that following the keyhole surgery , during which he could repair the damage in my shoulder. I would have to wear a restrictive sling for about 6 weeks, no driving and a period of Physiotherapy.
I had my operation on 10. 2. 04 and after an overnight stay was discharged on 11.2.04. Mr Funk informed me that the tear in my shoulder had been quite severe and that it would be painful for a while and that I was to take painkillers to relieve this plus anti - inflammatory tablets. Over the next 2 weeks, my shoulder ached and sleeping was uncomfortable because of this and the shoulder sling. I found it easier to sleep propped up by pillows. Gradually the pain lessened and I began to see some improvement.
I started to attend for Physiotherapy on 16.3.04 and did follow up exercises at home as instructed. My restrictive sling was removed after 6 weeks and I was able to drive again.
I had 10 sessions of Physiotherapy and on 18.5.04 was seen again by Mr. Funk. He was yen pleased with my progress, the surgery had been successful and I had full movement in my shoulder with no pain.
Since my discharge on that date, I am pleased to say that I have had no problems or pain with my shoulder and have nothing but praise for the treatment I received from all concerned. I would not hesitate in recommending this surgery to anyone who had the same problem as myself and wish them luck in their recovery. My thanks to all concerned
